The BSE Sensex rose 176.86 points or 1.01% to 17,727.49, its highest closing level since 17 June 2011. The Sensex gained 203.92 points at the day's high of 17,754.55 in afternoon trade. The index fell 68.42 points at the day's low of 17,482.21 in early trade. The S&P CNX Nifty rose 41.70 points or 0.79% to 5,320, its highest closing level since 17 June 2011. The Nifty hit a high of 5,330.60 in intraday trade. The Nifty hit a low of 5,252.25 in intraday trade. The BSE Mid-Cap index was down 0.06% and the BSE Small-Cap index was down 0.33%. Both these indices underperformed the Sensex.
The market breadth was negative. On BSE, 1,612 shares declined while 1,159 shares advanced and a total of 138 shares remained unchanged. Among the 30-member Sensex pack, 24 stocks rose while the rest of them fell. Cipla, Maruti Suzuki India, Bharat Heavy Electricals, HDFC, Hindalco Industries and Tata Steel shed by between 0.22% to 1.97%. Reliance Communications, Larsen & Toubro, ICICI Bank and Reliance Infrastructure rose by 0.92% to 3.36%.
FOR TODAY: While EU markets closed nearly 2% down, US market covers their early losses. After plunging nearly 2% earlier in the session, Dow recouped substantial ground through the session to close half a percent lower. S & P 500 lost 0.3% while Nasdaq in factgained two third of a percent. Asian markets mostly trading in GREEN except Taiwan, which is nearly 0.5% down. SGX Nifty is trading at 5355, up 36 point suggesting that Nifty may open near 5350 area which is very crucial.
Nifty future slipped into a discount of 4 points from a premium of 5 points. Put-call ratio inched up to 1.07 from 1.02 as calls, specially 5300 and 5200 strike, saw unwinding of positions while 5300 and 5200 put added open interest. Empowered Group of Ministers might take a decision on fuel price hike and possible duty rejig today. Oil Ministry yesterday submitted a proposal to the EGoM, demanding a Rs. 4 hike on diesel, if duty rejig is not done, Rs. 150 hike in LPG and Rs. 9 hike in kerosene.
